On August 30th, I set off for Lombok with my new crew member Jakub. It is still unclear whether we will be allowed to make a stop on the route. We also don’t have a visa for Indonesia yet. However, the cyclone season clock is ticking relentlessly. So it’s time to leave.

The Fiji Islands mainly consist of the two larger islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which means something like “Big Island” and “Small Island”. The other more than 300 islands are quite small and usually have only a few inhabitants. Savusavu is on Vanua Levu. There are currently no Covid cases here. This was one of the reasons why I chose this island to clear in.

From June 13th to 29th, 2021, I sailed single-handed across the pacific from French Polynesia to the Fiji Islands. The trip passed the Cook Islands, American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga. All these dreamlike islands would be a welcome change on the way to the Fiji Islands. However, due to the Covid19 pandemic, it was strictly forbidden to stop at these islands. So I had to cover the 1800 nautical miles without stopping.

One of the most emotional moments of my trip, maybe even of my life, was crossing the Panama Canal. Even as a child I was enthusiastic about how large ships can be moved across a lake from one ocean to another. Back then in the GDR, I hadn’t even dared to dream of seeing it with my own eyes, let alone crossing it with my own sailing yacht. Now it became a reality.
